truck accidents

Someone is injured in a semi-truck accident every 15 minutes in the United States, and close to 5,000 people die each year from accidents with semi-trucks. Because semi-trucks are so much larger and heavier than the passenger vehicles that they share the road with, the results of an accident with these trucks are frequently serious.

accidents

Although there is not specific data reported regarding the number of semi-truck crashes within each county of the state, semi-truck accidents account for 3.8% of all vehicle crashes in Illinois. In our area we frequently see semi-truck crashes on I-57, I-64, and I-24, and many of these crashes involve serious injuries.

Semi-trucks typically carry large commercial insurance policies. Because semi-truck crashes often involve serious injuries, getting an attorney soon after a crash involving a semi-truck is a good idea.

steps

to take

01
Get to a safe place. If you or others are in the roadway, try to move to the side of the road and if possible, activate hazard lights and set up warning cones or road flares further down the road toward oncoming traffic. These steps are important to lower the risk of a second crash.
02
Assess those involved in the crash for injuries requiring emergency medical treatment and contact law enforcement.

Remember, even if you do not see any visible injuries following a crash, or if adrenaline or shock prevents you from realizing the extent of an injury at the scene of a crash, it is important to get examined by a medical professional. When being examined, make sure you advise the doctor that you were in an accident, and explain all the symptoms you are having.
03
Stay calm. Being in a crash is naturally a high stress time; however, try to avoid yelling, cursing, and/or blaming the other driver(s).
04
Next, exchange contact information with the other driver(s) and photograph the scene and vehicles.
05
Report the facts of what occurred to the responding law enforcement officer so a written report may be prepared.
06
Contact your insurance company and advise them you have been in a crash. It is important to cooperate with your own insurance company; however, you should not give the other driver’s insurance company a recorded statement or sign any documents.
